Choosing Jewellery Box Materials: PU, Genuine Leather, Velvet and Acrylic
A practical comparison of four common materials across durability, cost, print compatibility and target market.
PU leather is the mainstream choice for cross-border orders: selectable grain, scratch and stain resistant, excellent for debossing and foil stamping, and cost controlled — ideal for batches above 300 pcs. Genuine leather offers the best hand feel and is used by premium jewellery and watch brands, but costs two to three times more and has natural colour variation that should be agreed in advance. Velvet is normally used as lining rather than shell: it protects finishes and is wrapped around ring rolls and necklace hooks; dark velvet attracts static and needs cleaning before shipment. Acrylic and clear PVC have grown quickly in e-commerce thanks to display appeal and low cost, but they are heat sensitive and scratch easily, suiting fast-moving accessory storage. Our recommendation: PU shell with velvet lining for Western e-commerce, genuine or premium PU for offline jewellery and gifting channels, and acrylic with coloured lining for the youth accessory market.
